Bosch Appliance Repair

Bosch sits in a different place from the other premium brands. The equipment is engineered well, parts are widely available, and the machines are genuinely repairable — but they are also common enough that they end up in every kind of installation, from a careful remodel to a cabinet someone cut to fit on a weekend.

That matters because a large share of Bosch calls turn out to be about how the appliance was installed rather than how it was built. Checking that first costs nothing and resolves more problems than any part does.

Dishwashers: Standing Water Is Usually the Drain Path

The most common Bosch call, and the drain pump is usually fine.

Three installation faults account for most of it. The drain hose is supposed to rise to just under the countertop before dropping to the disposal — without that high loop, water siphons back into the machine after the pump finishes. New garbage disposals ship with a sealed dishwasher inlet, and if the installer never punched out that knockout plug, the machine has nowhere to drain at all. And the line the dishwasher shares with the sink may be restricted downstream, which produces slow draining while the pump works perfectly.

Then the filter. Bosch dishwashers use a removable filter at the base of the tub that twists out by hand, and many owners have never taken it out. Food debris, glass fragments and jar labels collect there and restrict the drain.

Only after all of that do the drain pump, check valve and control board come into it. A pump that hums without moving water usually has an obstruction in the impeller rather than an electrical failure.

Dishwashers: Not Cleaning Well

Same filter, different symptom. A restricted filter means dirty water recirculating through the wash cycle, and dishes come out gritty or filmy.

Beyond that: blocked spray arm jets, a worn wash pump impeller, or a water inlet valve not delivering enough volume. Water temperature matters too — if the machine draws from a line that runs cold for the first minute, cleaning suffers no matter what condition the machine is in.

Ventless Dryers: The Condensate System

Bosch condensation dryers work differently from anything vented, and they fail differently too.

There is no duct. The machine cools the moist air, condenses it into water, collects it in a sump at the bottom, and a condensate pump moves it out. Nothing leaves the machine through an exhaust.

That means lint getting past the filters has nowhere to go. It settles in the condensate area and mixes with water, and over months becomes wet sludge. Most owners do not know that area exists, because on a vented dryer there is no equivalent.

A Recent Bosch Dryer Job

Call on a Bosch WTG865H3UC/02 showing a DR error and refusing to finish a cycle. DR points at drainage, so the condensate pump is the obvious suspect.

The pump tested fine. The fault was the water-level sensing contacts in the sump. When condensate rises, the water bridges those contacts and the board runs the pump. Wet lint had packed around them and was bridging them permanently, so the board kept reading water that was no longer there, ran the pump, saw the level never clear, and threw the error.

Cleaned the sump, the pump housing and the sensing area, reassembled, ran a full cycle. No error, drainage normal. $220, no parts.

Washers: Door Lock and Drain Filter First

On Bosch front loaders, a machine that fills and washes but leaves the load soaking wet most often has a failed door lock switch. The washer will not spin unless it confirms the door is secured, and on many models no error code appears when that confirmation fails — which is why it gets misdiagnosed as a board or motor problem.

If water is still standing in the drum, the drain filter is the place to start. It sits behind a small panel at the bottom front, and coins, hairpins and lint collect there. Clearing it resolves a large share of no-drain calls.

Beyond those: worn shock absorbers, the drive belt, the inlet valve. Error codes on these machines are specific and worth noting before calling.

Built-In Refrigeration

Bosch built-in and counter-depth refrigerators share the failure profile of other built-ins. A door gasket flattened on one side lets warm air in continuously and makes the unit run without cycling off — which looks like a failing compressor and gets quoted as one.

The dollar bill test settles it in ten seconds: close the door on one and pull. No resistance means no seal at that point. Condenser coils loaded with dust do the same thing more gradually. Both are checked before anything is said about a sealed system.

Panel-Ready and Integrated Installations

Bosch dishwashers and refrigerators are frequently panel-ready, fitted flush with cabinetry built for that exact opening. Servicing means bringing the machine forward on its own feet without catching the panel or the toe kick, and clearances are usually tight.

We check that before disconnecting anything and protect the floor and adjacent cabinet faces first.

Parts and Repair Economics

Bosch parts are generally available and not unreasonably priced, which puts most repairs comfortably on the right side of the repair-or-replace line — especially on dishwashers, where a large share of calls need no part at all.

Where it shifts is a control board on an older machine, or a wash pump where the part and labor start approaching the price of new. We give you the number before any work starts and say plainly when replacement makes more sense.

What the Visit Covers

The $89 diagnostic covers the trip and a full inspection: drain path and high loop, disposal connection, filter and sump, drain pump and impeller, check valve, spray arms and wash pump, inlet valve, door latch and gasket, condensate system on ventless dryers, heating circuit, and control board, as the appliance and symptom require. You get an explanation of what failed and a clear estimate before work begins. If you approve the repair, the diagnostic fee is waived, and completed work carries a 90-day warranty on labor and parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Bosch dishwasher has standing water. Is the pump dead?

Usually not. Check the drain path first — a missing high loop on the drain hose, a disposal knockout plug that was never removed, or a restriction in the line shared with the sink. Then the filter at the base of the tub. It costs nothing to check and resolves most of these calls.

Where is the filter on a Bosch dishwasher?

At the base of the tub, under the lower spray arm. On most models it twists out by hand. It collects food debris, glass fragments and jar labels, and many owners have never removed it.

What does the DR error mean on a Bosch dryer?

A drainage fault in the condensate system. It can be the pump, a blocked drain hose, or sensing contacts in the sump that debris is bridging — which makes the machine report water that is not there.

Do ventless dryers need maintenance a vented dryer does not?

Yes. In a vented dryer, lint that gets past the filter leaves through the duct. In a condensation dryer it has nowhere to go and accumulates in the condensate area. That area needs cleaning periodically, and most owners never know it exists.

My Bosch washer will not spin but shows no error. What is that?

Most often the door lock switch. The machine will not spin without confirming the door is secured, and on many models a failed switch produces no code at all — the cycle simply skips the spin.

Are Bosch appliances worth repairing?

Generally yes. Parts are available and reasonably priced, and on dishwashers a large share of calls need no part at all. The exception is a control board on an older machine where the part and labor approach the cost of replacement.
