Diagnosis before any price is quoted

We diagnose before we quote. You get an exact price before any work starts, a clear explanation of what failed, and a scheduled two-hour window so nobody waits around all day. If the repair does not make sense for the age of the unit, we say so.

Thermador Appliance Repair

Thermador leans further into electronics than most premium brands. Induction cooktops, touch controls, sensor-driven ovens, column refrigeration with digital management — the appliances are more computer-dependent, and that shapes both the failures and the diagnosis.

The practical consequence: these units usually tell you something before you open them. An error code, a blink pattern, a zone that behaves differently from its neighbors. Reading that first narrows the work considerably, and skipping it leads to replacing assemblies that were never the problem.

Induction: The Fan and the Power Board, Not the Coil

This is the most expensive misdiagnosis on Thermador equipment.

An induction cooktop generates heat in the pan, not the surface, using an electromagnetic coil under glass. The electronics driving that coil produce real heat of their own, and they are cooled by a fan underneath the unit.

When that fan fails or its intake clogs — and under a cooktop it collects dust readily — the power board overheats. The cooktop shuts a zone down, throws a code, or cuts out mid-cook and recovers once things cool. Owners describe it as intermittent, which makes it sound like a failing coil.

It is rarely the coil. Coils are passive and robust; they fail far less often than the electronics around them. Checking the fan and the ventilation path costs nothing and resolves a meaningful share of these calls. A cooktop replacement quote on a unit that needed its cooling path cleared is a bad outcome for everyone.

Radiant Cooktops: The Terminal Block

On radiant electric tops, a single dead zone is usually one of two things — the element itself, or the connector at the terminal block where it gets its supply.

That connection carries current every time the zone runs. Over years it loosens slightly, resistance builds, and the terminal runs hot. Eventually it burns and the element loses supply entirely.

The element then tests dead, which points people toward a new element. Fitting one into a burnt terminal means the same failure returns. The connection has to be repaired or replaced along with it.

Ovens: Sensor Before Board

A Thermador oven that heats unevenly, runs off setpoint, or throws temperature-related codes usually has a sensor problem rather than a board problem.

The temperature sensor is a resistance device. As it drifts out of spec the control board heats to the wrong target — faithfully, but to the wrong number. The board is working correctly on bad information.

Resistance is measurable in minutes and compared against the specification for that model. It is a much smaller part than a control board, and it is the more likely fault.

On gas models, an oven that runs cold points at the igniter’s current draw rather than the thermostat, for the same reason it does on any gas range — the igniter still glows while no longer pulling enough current to open the safety valve.

Error Codes Are Worth Writing Down

Thermador equipment reports specific faults, and the code points at a circuit rather than a guess. Sensor open, sensor shorted, communication failure between boards, door lock fault, cooling fan fault.

If your unit displays a code or a blink pattern, note it before calling. It changes what we check first and what gets brought to the visit, and it frequently shortens the repair.

Built-In Refrigeration and Freedom Columns

Thermador column refrigerators and freezers are separate units installed side by side, each with its own sealed system. That architecture is useful diagnostically: if one column holds temperature and the other does not, the fault is isolated to one unit rather than shared.

The common failures are the same as on other premium built-ins, and so is the common misdiagnosis. A door gasket that has flattened on one side lets warm air in continuously, the unit runs almost without cycling off, and it looks like a failing compressor. The dollar bill test takes ten seconds — close the door on one and pull. No resistance means no seal at that point.

Condenser coils behind the grille collect dust and lose capacity gradually. Both of these are a fraction of a sealed system repair and get checked first.

Self-Clean and Its Aftermath

Self-clean runs the cavity far hotter than cooking, and on electronics-heavy appliances it takes a toll. Thermal fuses open, control boards fail, and door lock motors seize during or just after the cycle.

If the oven worked, you ran self-clean, and now it does not, that history narrows the diagnosis to those three before anything is opened.

Removing a Built-In Without Damage

Thermador cooktops drop into stone countertops, wall ovens sit in cabinetry cut to size, and refrigeration columns sit behind custom panels. Servicing usually means lifting or pulling the unit and putting it back without marking the surround.

We plan that before disconnecting, protect the counter and adjacent faces first, and move the appliance on protection. If the installation makes safe removal impossible without a second person or without pulling trim, we say so before starting.

Parts: Ordered, Not Stocked

Thermador parts are ordered against the specific model and serial number. Lead time varies by component, and electronic assemblies sometimes take longer than mechanical ones. At the end of the diagnostic we tell you which part failed, whether it is available, and roughly how long it takes, so you can decide before committing.

What the Visit Covers

The $89 diagnostic covers the trip and a full inspection: error codes and fault history, induction cooling fan and ventilation path, power board, radiant elements and terminal connections, temperature sensor resistance, igniter current draw on gas models, thermal fuse, door lock, control board, and on refrigeration the door gasket, condenser coils, fans, defrost system and drain line. You get an explanation of what failed and a clear estimate before work begins. If you approve the repair, the diagnostic fee is waived, and completed work carries a 90-day warranty on labor and parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

My induction cooktop cuts out mid-cook and then works again. What is that?

Usually overheating electronics rather than a failing coil. A cooling fan that has failed or an intake clogged with dust lets the power board run hot, and the cooktop protects itself by shutting the zone down. It recovers once things cool, which is why it seems intermittent.

One zone on my radiant cooktop stopped heating. Do I need a new cooktop?

Almost never. It is usually the element or the connector at the terminal block that feeds it. If the terminal is burnt, both need attention — fitting a new element into a damaged connection brings the same failure back.

My oven bakes unevenly. Is the control board failing?

More often the temperature sensor. It is a resistance device, and as it drifts the board heats to the wrong target while working correctly. Resistance is measurable in minutes, and the sensor is a much smaller part than a board.

Should I write down the error code before calling?

Yes, and it genuinely helps. The code points at a specific circuit rather than a symptom, which changes what we check first and what we bring to the visit.

My Thermador refrigerator runs constantly. Is the compressor going?

Usually not. A flattened door gasket or condenser coils loaded with dust make a unit run without cycling off. Both are inexpensive compared with a sealed system repair and get ruled out first.

Are Thermador repairs worth it on older units?

Usually. These are built to be serviced and installed in openings built around them. The exception is an electronic assembly that is discontinued, or a major failure alongside several components near end of life — we say so when that is the case.
