Diagnosis before any price is quoted

We diagnose before we quote. You get an exact price before any work starts, a clear explanation of what failed, and a scheduled two-hour window so nobody waits around all day. If the repair does not make sense for the age of the unit, we say so.

Viking Appliance Repair

Viking covers more ground than most premium brands — professional ranges and rangetops, wall ovens, built-in refrigeration, dishwashers and outdoor grills. That breadth means the failure patterns depend heavily on which product is in front of you, and on how old it is.

Age matters more with Viking than with most manufacturers. The company changed hands and reworked its product lines, and units from different eras behave differently. The model and serial number are the first thing we ask for, because they determine what parts exist and which known issues apply.

Burners: Spark Module Before Igniter

The most common Viking call is a burner that clicks without lighting, or clicks continuously after a spill.

Start with the cap. If it is out of position or fouled with spillover, the spark cannot reach the gas, and cleaning it properly solves the problem without any part at all.

If the cap is clean and seated, the next question is which component. Here Viking has a specific tell: if every burner clicks at once when only one knob is turned, the fault is in the spark module or a switch, not in that burner’s electrode. Moisture in the module produces exactly this, and it often follows a spill or a heavy cleaning.

That distinction is worth making before anything is ordered, because a module and an electrode are different parts at very different prices.

Oven Runs Cold: Measure, Do Not Guess

On the gas oven side, the same principle applies as on any professional range. The igniter has two jobs — glow hot enough to light the gas, and draw enough current to open the safety valve. It loses the second while keeping the first.

An igniter that visibly glows can still leave the valve closed. The oven preheats slowly, runs below setpoint, or never fires. The part looks fine and tests bad.

We read the current draw under load with a clamp meter before quoting anything. On electric and dual-fuel ovens, weak or uneven heat points instead at the bake element, the temperature sensor, or a relay on the control board — a visual check and a resistance reading separate those quickly.

Built-In Refrigeration

Viking built-in refrigerators share the failure profile of other premium built-ins, and the same expensive misdiagnosis.

A door gasket that has flattened on one side lets warm air in continuously. The unit runs almost without cycling off, the compartment stays warm despite running constantly, and frost appears where it should not. That looks like a failing compressor and gets quoted as one.

The test is quick: close the door on a dollar bill and pull. No resistance means the seal is not contacting at that point. Check several places around the perimeter — gaskets fail on one side first.

The other frequent cause is condenser coils loaded with dust behind the grille. Both are a fraction of a sealed system repair, and both should be ruled out before anyone mentions a compressor.

Model and Serial Number Matter Here

Viking went through ownership changes and product revisions, and parts availability varies considerably between generations. Some components for older units are still readily available; others are not.

This is why we ask for the model and serial before ordering anything, and why we confirm availability and lead time at the end of the diagnostic rather than after the part fails to arrive. On an older unit, knowing whether the part exists changes the repair-or-replace decision entirely.

Removing a Range or Built-In Without Damage

Viking equipment sits in openings built around it — ranges between stone counters, refrigerators behind custom panels, wall ovens in cabinetry cut to fit. Servicing usually means moving the unit and putting it back without marking anything.

We plan the removal before disconnecting, protect the floor and adjacent cabinet faces, and move the appliance on protection rather than dragging it. If the installation makes safe removal impossible without a second person or without pulling trim, we say so before starting.

Old Gas Connections

In Los Angeles housing the shutoff valve and flexible connector behind a range are often decades older than the appliance. Moving the unit disturbs that connection, and a valve that will not seat or a connector showing damage gets reported rather than worked around.

If you smell gas at any point, shut off the supply at the valve if you can reach it safely, do not operate the appliance, ventilate the room, and leave electrical switches alone.

Is a Viking Worth Repairing?

Usually yes. These are serviceable units built around a long service life, and replacement means matching an opening that was built for them.

The honest exception is an older unit where the needed part is no longer produced, or where a sealed system failure meets several other components near end of life. We tell you when that is the situation rather than quoting a repair that does not pay for itself.

What the Visit Covers

The $89 diagnostic covers the trip and a full inspection: igniter current draw, burner caps and assemblies, spark module and switches, safety valve, bake and broil elements, temperature sensor, control board, and on refrigeration the door gasket, condenser coils, evaporator and condenser fans, defrost system and drain line. You get an explanation of what failed and a clear estimate before work begins. If you approve the repair, the diagnostic fee is waived, and completed work carries a 90-day warranty on labor and parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

All my Viking burners click when I turn on just one. What is that?

The spark module or a switch, not the igniter for that burner. Moisture in the module produces this, often after a spill or a heavy cleaning. Different part, different price — worth identifying before anything is ordered.

My Viking oven glows but does not heat properly. Is the thermostat bad?

More often the igniter. It has to draw enough current to open the gas safety valve, and as it ages it still glows while that draw falls below spec. We measure it under load before quoting a part.

My Viking refrigerator runs constantly. Is the compressor going?

Usually not. A unit that never cycles off is fighting something — a flattened door gasket, condenser coils loaded with dust, or an iced evaporator. All three cost a fraction of a sealed system repair and should be ruled out first.

Are parts still available for older Viking appliances?

It depends on the generation. Viking went through ownership and product changes, and availability varies between eras. We check against your model and serial number and tell you before you commit to anything.

Do you work on Viking dishwashers and outdoor grills?

Dishwashers yes. Outdoor grills and other outdoor kitchen equipment we do not service.

Is a twenty-year-old Viking worth fixing?

Often yes — these were built to last and to be serviced. The exception is when the needed part is discontinued, or when a major failure coincides with several other components near end of life. We say so when that is the case.
