Fault Code 3 on a GE front load washer reads as Locked Rotor, which sounds like a seized motor or failed bearings. On this GFW550SSN0WW the motor was healthy. The inverter board that controls motor speed had failed, so the drum turned briefly and stopped before reaching spin.
Job details
Model: GE GFW550SSN0WW front load washer
Symptom: Drum turns slowly for a few seconds, then stops, never reaches spin
Diagnostic code: Fault Code 3 — Locked Rotor
Suspected: Failed motor or bearings
Actual cause: Failed inverter board
Part: WH22X38837, supersedes WH22X29531
Location: N Formosa Ave, West Hollywood, CA
What the customer reported
The washer would wash and drain normally, but it would not spin. The drum would begin rotating slowly for a few seconds and then stop. Clothes came out soaking wet at the end of every cycle.
Why “Locked Rotor” is misleading
The wording of the code sends people in the wrong direction, and it is worth understanding why.
A Locked Rotor fault means the control board commanded the motor to run and could not get the speed it expected. That is all it means. It does not confirm that the rotor is physically locked, and it does not identify which part in that circuit failed.
There are several ways to produce it: seized bearings, a jammed drum, a wiring fault, or a failure in the board that drives the motor. The code is the same in every case.
Because the name points at the motor, that is what gets quoted — and on these machines a motor and bearing job is a significantly larger repair than the alternative.
What it actually was
I ran the drain function first to confirm the machine was clearing water, then Spin Test 14 and Accelerated Spin Test 26 from the service menu.
The washer would not accelerate. The motor was receiving the run command and responding to it — it was turning — but the speed could not be maintained or increased. The drum would spin up briefly and give up.
That behavior pointed away from the motor and toward the inverter board, which regulates motor speed and drives the spin cycle. A motor that was seized would not turn at all; a motor with bad bearings would be loud and would fight. This one simply lost control of its speed.
The repair
Replaced the inverter board, part WH22X38837. The older part number WH22X29531 is superseded by it, which matters when ordering — the earlier number still shows up in parts listings.
After installation I ran a full cycle. Normal acceleration, full-speed spin, and the load came out properly wrung.
Frequently asked questions
What does Fault Code 3 mean on a GE washer?
Locked Rotor — the control commanded the motor to run and did not get the speed it expected. It does not confirm the motor is seized. Several faults produce the same code, including a failed inverter board.
My GE washer spins slowly then stops. Is the motor dead?
Not necessarily. A motor that has seized will not turn at all. A motor that turns briefly and loses speed usually points at the board controlling it rather than the motor itself.
What does the inverter board do?
It regulates motor speed and drives the spin cycle. When it fails, the machine can start the motor but cannot bring it up to or hold spin speed — which produces exactly the symptom of a drum that turns briefly and stops.
Why are there two part numbers for the same board?
WH22X38837 supersedes WH22X29531. The older number still appears in parts listings, and ordering by it can cause confusion. Both refer to the same replacement board for this model.
