Dryer Symptoms and What They Usually Mean
Almost every dryer call is one of four complaints. The distinction between them matters, because two of them are rarely about the dryer at all.
Takes two or three cycles to dry one load
The heat is working. The moist air has nowhere to go.
Dryer vents accumulate lint over years, and the longer and more bent the run, the faster it happens. Restricted airflow makes cycles long, raises internal temperature, and eventually opens the thermal fuse — at which point the dryer stops heating entirely and looks like a component failure.
This sequence is the single most common repeat repair in the trade. A thermal fuse replaced behind a blocked duct fails again within months. That is why the full vent run gets inspected on every slow-drying and no-heat call.
No heat at all
On an electric dryer, before any part: the machine runs on two 120-volt legs. The motor and controls use one. The heating element needs both. If one leg is lost — a half-tripped double breaker, a loose outlet connection, a worn cord terminal — the drum turns, the panel lights up, the cycle runs, and there is no heat whatsoever. The dryer is fine.
Cycling the double breaker fully off and back on is worth doing before calling anyone. If heat does not return, the suspects are the heating element, thermal fuse, thermal cutoff and cycling thermostat.
On gas dryers the chain is different: the igniter glows, the flame sensor confirms temperature, then the gas valve coils open. A break anywhere in that sequence gives a turning drum and cold air.
Drum will not turn
A dryer that hums without tumbling is usually a broken belt, a seized idler pulley, or worn drum rollers. If the motor does not respond at all, the start switch or the motor itself is the suspect. The sound tells you most of it before anything is opened.
Noise
Squealing that follows drum rotation is normally the idler pulley or the rollers. Rhythmic thumping is often a flat spot worn into a roller. Grinding or rattling that changes when the drum is loaded can be an object caught in the blower wheel — coins and hairpins are the usual culprits, and clearing that takes minutes.
Why Airflow Explains Most Dryer Failures
A dryer is a simple machine: it heats air, moves it through wet clothes, and exhausts it. Nearly every failure traces back to the middle step.
When airflow is restricted, the internal temperature climbs beyond design. That is what kills heating elements early, opens thermal fuses, degrades belts and bearings, and shortens the life of the machine as a whole. A dryer with a clear vent can run for fifteen years. The same dryer with a duct half-full of lint will need parts within three.
This is also a safety issue, not only a repair one. Restricted ducts combined with a failed safety component are how dryer fires start.
When to Stop Using It
Burning smell, scorch marks at the outlet, or a breaker that trips repeatedly — unplug the dryer and stop using it. A circuit drawing enough current to trip is not something to reset and retry.
Repair or Replace?
Dryers are among the most repairable appliances. The mechanical parts — rollers, belts, idlers, elements, fuses, thermostats — are inexpensive and accessible, and a dryer that gets a cleared vent and a set of rollers often runs another decade.
Replacement makes more sense when the motor or the control board fails on an older machine, or when the drum itself is damaged.
What the Diagnostic Covers
The $89 diagnostic covers the visit and a full inspection: voltage under load, heating element, thermal fuse and cutoff, thermostats, igniter and valve coils on gas units, belt, rollers, idler, blower wheel, moisture sensor, control board, and the complete vent path. You get an explanation of what failed and a clear estimate before work begins. If you approve the repair, the fee is waived, and completed work carries a 90-day warranty on labor and parts.
