The evaporator fan

Open the freezer and listen. On most models you should hear a fan running inside. If you hear nothing, or the fan starts and stops when you press the door switch, that is the fan motor. Without it, cold air stays in the freezer and never reaches the refrigerator section.

The defrost system

Open the freezer and look at the back wall. If it is a solid sheet of ice rather than light frost, the defrost cycle is not running. The heater, the thermostat or the control board has failed, and the ice is blocking airflow completely. Melting it manually restores cooling for a few days, then it returns.

Condenser coils

The coils are behind the lower grille or at the back. If they are packed with dust and pet hair, heat cannot escape and the unit runs continuously without reaching temperature. Freezer is cold but the refrigerator is warm
