Frost Buildup Is the Most Common Call
Ice on the walls, on the floor of the cabinet, around the fan opening. It looks cosmetic and it is not.
Frost accumulates when the defrost cycle stops completing. On frost-free models that means the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat, or the control board that times the cycle. The ice builds on the evaporator coil until airflow is blocked entirely, and then the unit stops cooling — usually right after the owner has stocked it.
Chipping the ice out restores cooling for a week or two, then it returns. The cause has to be found or the cycle repeats indefinitely.
There is also a simpler version: a door seal that has lost compression lets humid room air in continuously, and that moisture becomes frost. On a chest freezer the lid gasket is easy to overlook because the lid closes under its own weight and seems fine.
Running but Not Freezing
If you can hear the unit running and the interior is above freezing, the sealed system is often fine.
The usual causes are an evaporator fan that has stopped circulating cold air, condenser coils clogged with dust, or the iced-over evaporator described above. All three cost a fraction of a compressor replacement, and all three should be ruled out before anyone quotes one.
On a chest freezer there is often no fan at all — those cool by convection, which means they fail differently and usually more gracefully. A chest freezer that is warm but running points more directly at the sealed system or the thermostat.
Not Running at All
No sound, no light: start with power. The outlet, the breaker, the cord.
If there is a light but no sound, and the unit clicks every few minutes without starting, that points at the start relay or capacitor rather than the compressor itself. A relay is a small part protecting an expensive one, and it fails far more often.
This is worth knowing, because a freezer that clicks and does not start gets written off as dead regularly when the fault is a connector.
Garage and Outdoor Freezers
A freezer in an unconditioned garage is working in conditions most units were not designed for.
Standard freezers have a thermostat that reads the surrounding air. In a cold garage the thermostat can decide the unit does not need to run — while the interior slowly warms. In a hot garage the compressor runs almost continuously and wears faster.
Garage-ready models handle this with a different control scheme. A standard model in a garage will behave erratically, and that is not a fault to repair — it is a mismatch between the unit and where it was put.
Water on the Floor
Meltwater escaping the drain path rather than a leak in the plumbing sense. A clogged or frozen defrost drain sends condensate into the cabinet and eventually out the door seal.
On chest freezers there is usually a manual drain plug at the bottom. If it has never been opened, that is worth checking before anything is dismantled.
Is It Worth Repairing?
Depends heavily on the unit. A built-in or column freezer is almost always worth repairing — replacement means matching an opening. A commercial-grade or premium chest freezer likewise.

Keep it closed. Every opening resets the clock. If the freezer is only half full, group the contents together in the center — a dense mass holds cold far longer than scattered items.
